The Fence Post

A Flat Twist on fencing in my own garden

May 5, 2025 | by Duncan Page

unnamed (10)A Flat Twist on Fencing in My Own Garden

Today, I want to share a unique approach to fencing my garden—a “flat twist,” you could say—inspired by an intriguing idea I stumbled upon online. While my initial attempt was met with great success, a recent challenge has prompted me to seek your insights and experiences.

The Challenge of Wildlife in New Hampshire

In the beautiful, wildlife-rich landscape of New Hampshire, where we contend with black bears, porcupines, deer, groundhogs, voles, chipmunks, and squirrels, protecting the bounty of my berries and tomatoes has always been a priority. Instead of opting for the conventional approach, I decided to explore an unconventional method to deter these marauders.

The Unconventional Solution

You might be wondering why I didn't resort to the usual fencing methods as the owner of a fencing company. The answer lies in the urgency of the situation. When I moved to my new home, I couldn't find anyone available to install a fence in time for the gardening season. So, in my quest to safeguard my garden, I discovered a fascinating concept online: laying wire mesh fencing directly on the ground to create a unique and barrier-free solution.

Initially, the results were nothing short of spectacular. The wire mesh effectively deterred wildlife and safeguarded my cherished plants for two years, leaving fellow gardeners impressed. The ingenious idea seemed to work like magic—no posts, no gates, just a simple wire mesh laid on the ground.

The Theory Behind the Method

The core theory behind this method was that the animals disliked walking on the wire mesh and stayed on the other side of it—out of my garden. It was indeed a clever and low-maintenance idea, which is what initially drew me to it.

Facing New Challenges

However, as time passed, a new challenge emerged. Grass and weeds grew through the mesh, gradually compromising the once-secure barrier. This growth partially covered the wire and made it easier for the very animals I sought to keep out to access my garden once more.

Seeking Your Insights

I'm reaching out to you, our valued customers, because I believe in the power of shared experiences and collective wisdom. Have you ever experimented with a similar approach in gardening or farming? Did you face any challenges similar to those I'm currently grappling with? If so, I'd greatly appreciate hearing about your experiences and any innovative solutions or recommendations you may have.

Specifically, I'm interested in learning how you managed to maintain the integrity of the wire mesh fence over time, particularly in the face of grass and weed growth. Your firsthand knowledge will help me address this issue and continue to protect my garden successfully.

Of course, I did get the mesh I laid on the ground from Louis Page 😉️

We have Amos and Andy and Isabelle!

We have Amos and Andy and Isabelle!

This is a continuation of Daniel and his three goats. It wasn’t long before Penny’s delivery time arrived. Penny was the pregnant goat I mentioned yesterday, but I failed to mention her name.

Daniel checked on her frequently these days. One morning, close to lunch, he came and got me from my office to let me know she was in labor. As a labor and delivery nurse, I was excited to attend the birth.

As I got to the goat shed, I quickly assessed the situation and could tell she was in trouble. The second kid had managed to get its hoof past the head of the first kid. Donning gloves, I attempted to push the hoof back behind the head, but to no avail. I tried a second time. I tried for a third and final time.

You might wonder what the nanny goat was doing with all this ongoing intervention. She remained calm and unphased other than her laboring to deliver her goats. Recognizing we needed professional help, I told Daniel to run to the house and call Eric. (this was before cell phones). Eric was Ann’s husband and super familiar with cows and goats giving birth.

Daniel thought we’d be okay, and I made it clear that we were not! He ran to the house, and within a few minutes, Eric was pulling up in his truck. I was so glad to see him! Putting on gloves, Eric did what I had been doing but with much more strength! He succeeded, moving the second kid out of the way, and soon,

the first was delivered,

followed by the second and

then a third!

Triplets!

I just witnessed the birth of triplets, and what a delight and relief. All appeared healthy and robust. Woohoo! I was so excited and blurted out,

“We have Amos and Andy and Isabelle!”

Growing up in the 50s and 60s, Amos and Andy were famous radio sitcoms. My family and I enjoyed many evenings gathered around the radio, listening and laughing. I miss those days of radio productions when you had to use your imagination to paint the pictures in your mind. It’s one of the reasons I love storytelling with words, not pictures.

Planning for your fence projects is precisely the same thing. First, you paint the picture in your mind, then draw it out, and then physically create it on your or your customer’s property. One of our customers has been super busy with customer projects, most of them involving panels.

Wire mesh panels are one of my favorite products. They come in many different sizes and finishes, from galvanized before weld (GBW) to galvanized after weld (GAW) to vinyl-coated (VC) in black or green ,to stainless steel.

Check out Louis Page for more information and photos. Wire mesh panels have numerous uses, from decks to balconies to machine guards. Start planning today!

Celebrate your dog?

Celebrate your dog?

How do you like to celebrate your dog? And how does your property enhance your celebrations? Are you spending time with your dog outside in your own front or backyard? Does your fence give you a sense of calmness and security?

I love watching my little 18-lb black poodle, Phoebe Louise, run around my property. The fence gives her boundaries and a sense of security, and I get the pleasure of watching her run around and leap like a lamb. She loves the snow and doesn't hold back from expending her energy bounding over snow drifts and stones. She's a marvel to watch.

Recently, friends kept her for two weeks for the first time. They fell in love with her. When I arrived to pick her up, they were like doting grandparents throwing out compliment after compliment: “She's so smart. She's the fastest dog we've ever seen. She never bothered us when we slept in. She came when we called (hmm…that's good, but not always my experience with her!) She loved sleeping on our lap during evening television, etc.”

I'm still glowing from the review. (Insert smiles and pride.)

Having a fenced backyard makes for a worry-free environment, and Jerry created a wonderful strip for her to run and leap on.

I bet it's time to fence in your yard and give your dog its protected paradise!

Big dog? No problem! Small dog? No problem! Jumping dog (remember Pugsy?)?

Terry has you covered. Call her @ 978-486-3116 to receive your free quote.

Enjoy your backyard with your pup, knowing it is safe and sound within your boundaries.

Rivers, stone fences, and the brick fortress

February 2, 2025 | by debbie

Rivers, stone fences, and the brick fortress

We took the train to Albi, an hour northeast of Toulouse. We passed miles and miles of one of my favorite fences, primarily green, some black, and even white. We crossed rivers and beautiful countryside.

I am amazed at how much fencing contributes to our world. Though we passed a small section of vinyl-coated chain link, most of the fencing was what we sell as Prism Fence. It's super attractive.

As we arrived in the city of Albi, the sight of the Sainte-Cecil d’Albi Cathedral left us in awe. This massive castle-like structure, the largest brick structure in the world, dating back to the 13th century, stood before us. It's also the largest painted cathedral in the world--five acres of paintings! The sheer size and all-brick construction were unlike anything I've ever seen. It's an experience that will forever be etched in my memory.

This massive structure took 200 years to build and is one of the world's most magnificent wonders.

The cathedral's “Treasury” is housed above the main floor, and access is only through a stone spiral staircase. Up and up, we wound to the two rooms of the Treasury, which contained magnificent paintings, icons, and gold treasures of the church.

One of the cathedral's most captivating features is the white stone fence, a true stone lace that separates the choir from the nave. The intricacy of its details is so remarkable that it's hard to fathom how any human being could have carved it. For me, this unique architectural element is not just a testament to the craftsmanship of the time but a personal testament to the beauty and artistry of human hands.

So, my day was filled with fences inside and out. It was the first time I saw a carved stone fence. I failed to mention that when you stand outside this massive structure on the Tarn River, you can look over the river to the brick factories on the hill. This journey, with its myriad of fences and the grandeur of the cathedral, has left an indelible mark on my memory, and I hope it does the same for you.

Check out our Prism fence. It’s practical, aesthetically pleasing, and easy to install.

My warmest regards,

Debbie Page
