🏡 Building Dreams and Fences with My Granddaughter

At Louis E. Page, we know that a fence is more than just a boundary—it’s part of a story. Today, I’d like to share a special story about my six-year-old granddaughter, who already knows me so well that she’s not just part of my life but also part of my dreams for the future.

A House Full of Love (and Fences!)

You see, my family has recently cleared five acres of land on their lower property, intending to use it for pasture. But they’ve also been kind enough to encourage me to build a house there someday—something I’m very excited about. My granddaughter and I have been having wonderful conversations about what that house might look like. She’s put a lot of thought into it, even sketching out her ideas on graph paper!

When they arrived for dinner yesterday afternoon, she proudly showed me her design—a large house with so many thoughtful details. There were bunk beds in her bedroom, “spend-the-night” rooms for guests, a bedroom for her sister and herself, one for her brother, and a dining room with a table with 20 chairs! She knows how much I love lots of people at my table.

And, of course, outside the house were fences and a sauna. I smiled when I saw them because, to her, a house isn’t complete without a fence—something she must have picked up from our family business! It made me proud to see that fences are already part of her thinking.

I was reminded of something recently when I thought back to my senior year of high school. My best friend and I were bemoaning the fact that we would soon be parting ways—she was heading off to college in North Carolina, and I was going to Georgia. We lived in South Carolina and had spent years together, so the idea of separating felt heartbreaking.

As we sat there feeling sorry for ourselves, her dad—this big, burly guy—walked in and asked what was wrong. When we told him, he sat down and said:

"You know, girls, life is like a pair of blue jeans. You wear them and love them, and they become your favorite. You always want to put them on because they’re broken in and comfortable. But one day, you realize they’re wearing out, and you’re going to have to replace them. At first, you won’t like the new pair. They’re stiff, uncomfortable—not your favorite. But give it a little time, and soon enough, those new jeans will become your favorite, too."

His words stuck with me. Change is uncomfortable at first, but if we give ourselves the chance to adjust, we find that what’s new can be just as good—if not better—than what we left behind.

Last night, I found myself swept off my feet—literally—at the longest-running Contra dance in the United States, just a few minutes up the road from me. Now, I’ve tried Scottish dancing, ballroom dancing, and even square dancing before, but Contra dancing? That’s a new one for me.

Well, I’m super passionate about sharing this story with you, because it shows how life can swoop in with the most unexpected surprises!

Looking at this from a bird’s-eye view, I surmise that some problems really are easier to fence out than others. And actually... I have this amazing story about my sister that I just have to share.

The Neighborhood Cat Whisperer

She’s got this incredible heart for animals—especially cats. So over the last couple of years, she started feeding these sweet strays that would show up at her back door. And you’re not going to believe this, but I started counting, and she’s up to 17 cats now. Yes, really!

Now, here’s where it gets interesting. While she’s absolutely loving her role as the neighborhood cat whisperer, she’s suddenly dealing with some, well, unexpected guests. I’m talking about vultures. Big ones. These massive black-winged birds have just decided to make themselves at home in her beautiful 125-year-old oak trees. And I can tell you, she’s super freaked out about it!

Fencing Out the Unexpected

So I started thinking about solutions, because that’s what I’m passionate about—helping people solve problems. Maybe a fence could help! I mean, sure, cats can climb (they’re super talented that way), but the right enclosure could definitely discourage more strays from joining the party. 💪 Plumbing, Electrical, and Fencing: A Story About Strength and Mesh

I was thinking about my dad today and wanted to share a story that always makes me smile.

The Year of the Knife

When my dad was 77, he had what we jokingly referred to as "his year of the knife." First, he got a pacemaker (electrical), then had hernia repair (structural reinforcements, perhaps?), and finally underwent a triple bypass (plumbing). For the hernia repair, they used polypropylene mesh—a material that reminded me of the plastic mesh some of our customers use in their projects today.

After that eventful year, my dad, who had a strong constitution, went on to live to the ripe old age of 90. But what really stuck with me was his primary doctor’s sense of humor. At his next checkup, the doctor said:

"Well, Mr. Hoffman, we’ve repaired your plumbing and electrical systems, and reinforced the structure. As long as the roof doesn’t cave in, you’re good for another 20 years!"

That sense of resilience and humor is something I admire and try to carry into all aspects of life, including our work at Louis E. Page, Inc.
