Please Don’t Hurt My Friend

(Probably) way before you were born, I attended nursing school in Atlanta, Georgia. I had no car, and neither did my friends, so we were dependent on city transportation, i.e., the bus.

A Harrowing Experience

Betty and I went to the city to shop for a friend’s bridal shower. We loaded our arms with kitchen goods: dish drying rack, broom, mop, bucket, and who knows what else! We looked like peddlers. While waiting for the bus to take us back to the dorm, a beggar approached Betty.

“Give me a little kiss,” he said.

Betty gave him an emphatic “No!” and walked away. But the guy was persistent. He probably liked her gorgeous red hair.

“Give me a little kiss,” he repeated.

Betty backed away toward the closest department store. She turned to go into the store, only to find it was closed! The door to this store was at the end of a large recessed area. Betty felt trapped. I saw the panic on her face, so I approached cautiously, half hysterical, half panicked.

Though the sidewalk was still bustling with people, no one stopped to help us. By this time, Betty was screaming at the guy to leave her alone. I must have been helpless. Betty thought I was hopeless.

Thank goodness our bus arrived, we boarded and sat down. Understandably, Betty proceeded to let me have it. She told me that I was following the man, tugging on his shirt sleeve, pleading weakly, “Please don’t hurt my friend.”

Helpless, hopeless, and now wretched! 😢️

💪 Plumbing, Electrical, and Fencing: A Story About Strength and Mesh

💪 Plumbing, Electrical, and Fencing: A Story About Strength and Mesh

I was thinking about my dad today and wanted to share a story that always makes me smile.

The Year of the Knife

When my dad was 77, he had what we jokingly referred to as "his year of the knife." First, he got a pacemaker (electrical), then had hernia repair (structural reinforcements, perhaps?), and finally underwent a triple bypass (plumbing). For the hernia repair, they used polypropylene mesh—a material that reminded me of the plastic mesh some of our customers use in their projects today.

After that eventful year, my dad, who had a strong constitution, went on to live to the ripe old age of 90. But what really stuck with me was his primary doctor’s sense of humor. At his next checkup, the doctor said:

"Well, Mr. Hoffman, we’ve repaired your plumbing and electrical systems, and reinforced the structure. As long as the roof doesn’t cave in, you’re good for another 20 years!"

That sense of resilience and humor is something I admire and try to carry into all aspects of life, including our work at Louis E. Page, Inc.

Strength in Every Strand

Like the polypropylene mesh that helped support my dad’s recovery, the plastic netting and mesh we offer provide strength and reliability for a variety of applications—just on a very different scale.

Whether you need plastic mesh for agricultural use, safety applications, or garden enclosures, we have a wide selection designed to suit your project’s specific needs. The mesh openings may be small, but the strength and flexibility are substantial—qualities my dad would’ve appreciated!

Find the Right Mesh for Your Project

You can explore our plastic netting options, or give our expert, Terry, a call at 978-486-3116 if you have any questions or need recommendations for your next project.

Thank you for letting me share this story—it’s a reminder that no matter the challenges we face, a little strength, a little humor, and the right support can go a long way.

May you enjoy today with a laugh in it!

What Comes First? Confidence or Commitment?

Every day involves making decisions. We make . When we look at people, we can say to ourselves, . Do they smoke? Do they have great posture? Are they overweight? All of those things are based on their decisions leading up to this moment and in this moment. Looking in the mirror, I see the same things: decisions.

The Power of Commitment

So, what comes first? Confidence or commitment? It’s a valid question. When I decided to get healthy, my . As I changed my eating habits and began to lose weight, my .

The same applies to in our backyard. Are we confident we can create it? Or do we commit to doing it, and the confidence grows? You decide.

The Eagle and Child

The Eagle and Child

If you are familiar with , you recognize the title. Writing in Oxford, England, in the 1930s, 40s, and beyond, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and other authors met regularly to discuss literature and the books they were working on. Lewis is known for the Chronicles of Narnia, and Tolkien for The Lord of the Rings. They met at a pub in St. Giles called the Eagle and Child, which they nicknamed the “Bird and Baby.”

A Spectacular Sighting

What made me think of that? My view of the lake is spectacular, and this week, I have seen the mature Bald eagle with the classic white head and the juvenile eagle with brown heads and mottled bodies and wings. A note of trivia: the than the mature eagle due to its longer feathers. Both creatures are magnificent. And I witnessed both of them several times this week.

Here’s the treat of the week. Yesterday, while I was on the screen porch, the juvenile eagle—the “child”—flew towards me, turned around, skimmed the lake's surface, turned around again, and landed on the roof of the boathouse. Perched at my eye level, he sat there looking at me. Spectacular! Probably “a once-in-a-lifetime” event! What an absolute joy to witness.

Fencing for Protection

It’s lovely that so many of God’s creatures can roam or fly wherever they choose. But humans must , etc., from other creatures. Though they might be beautiful, we don’t want them in certain places.

When Your Wisdom Isn't Spot On

Lake Winnepausakee is home to New England’s oldest feathered resident, the loon. I have enjoyed these lovely diving birds for many decades. They spend their time in the water and are clumsy on land. Their evening calls are . Once you hear them, you never forget their cry.

The Loons' Precarious Nest

This summer, one pair of loons decided to build their nest in a precarious place. They of one of the beaches. Granted, this is not a busy beach as far as people swimming, but it’s a narrow stretch of sand beside a busy road. As soon as the nest was spotted, someone put on three sides to protect it from the traffic and people.

When I drive past, Mrs. Loon is sitting on her cherished nest. I wondered what in the world she was thinking when she chose that spot for her nest. Were all the other spaces taken? Did Mr. Loon make the decision?
