The Eagle and Child

The Eagle and Child

If you are familiar with , you recognize the title. Writing in Oxford, England, in the 1930s, 40s, and beyond, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and other authors met regularly to discuss literature and the books they were working on. Lewis is known for the Chronicles of Narnia, and Tolkien for The Lord of the Rings. They met at a pub in St. Giles called the Eagle and Child, which they nicknamed the “Bird and Baby.”

A Spectacular Sighting

What made me think of that? My view of the lake is spectacular, and this week, I have seen the mature Bald eagle with the classic white head and the juvenile eagle with brown heads and mottled bodies and wings. A note of trivia: the than the mature eagle due to its longer feathers. Both creatures are magnificent. And I witnessed both of them several times this week.

Here’s the treat of the week. Yesterday, while I was on the screen porch, the juvenile eagle—the “child”—flew towards me, turned around, skimmed the lake's surface, turned around again, and landed on the roof of the boathouse. Perched at my eye level, he sat there looking at me. Spectacular! Probably “a once-in-a-lifetime” event! What an absolute joy to witness.

Fencing for Protection

It’s lovely that so many of God’s creatures can roam or fly wherever they choose. But humans must , etc., from other creatures. Though they might be beautiful, we don’t want them in certain places.

When Your Wisdom Isn't Spot On

Lake Winnepausakee is home to New England’s oldest feathered resident, the loon. I have enjoyed these lovely diving birds for many decades. They spend their time in the water and are clumsy on land. Their evening calls are . Once you hear them, you never forget their cry.

The Loons' Precarious Nest

This summer, one pair of loons decided to build their nest in a precarious place. They of one of the beaches. Granted, this is not a busy beach as far as people swimming, but it’s a narrow stretch of sand beside a busy road. As soon as the nest was spotted, someone put on three sides to protect it from the traffic and people.

When I drive past, Mrs. Loon is sitting on her cherished nest. I wondered what in the world she was thinking when she chose that spot for her nest. Were all the other spaces taken? Did Mr. Loon make the decision?

It’s a Three-Day Blow

I’m sitting at my makeshift desk at the lake. I had planned to leave last night, but the pull of gorgeous June weather made me change my mind. It was a wee bit chilly at 5:30 a.m., and I was glad for the extra comforter. Yesterday being rainy all day, I fired up the wood stove. My brother, sitting outside in Alabama yesterday, announced it was 93 degrees. Today is warmer and dry, but the wind is just below the level of whipping up white caps.

The Three-Day Blow

Duncan taught me about the on this New Hampshire lake. I had never witnessed that at home, but a its own weather. So, here I am in a three-day blow. But which day is it? Saturday had strong winds; yesterday, it was hard to judge because of the rain. I’ll find out tomorrow if this is day three or one.

While Duncan was still roaming this beautiful earth with me, we’d head out hiking when it was super windy. Though we both loved sailing, we weren’t interested in having to work that hard to harness the wind—we were . I miss him and our wooden sailboat. I have a great deal to learn to . I keep saying I will take a sailing course at the . Yep, one of these days.

Rick and the Girl in the Library

Rick and the Girl in the Library

My brother Rick is hilarious. I know; I grew up with and worked with him as an adult. Being hilarious often means you’ll do things others wouldn’t dare. And being hilarious means you’re spontaneous. Yep, that’s Rick, too.

The Hilarious Incident

In his college days at the University of North Carolina, he and his buddies would meet in the library to study. They were all intelligent guys, so I suppose they studied and pushed one another to exceed. Rick had his eye on a beautiful blonde he’d been seeing on campus. He set his mind on getting a date with her. But how could he meet her? It seemed a daunting task.

One evening, while in the library with his buddies, this golden beauty walks in. His heart starts beating. Could this be his long-hoped-for opportunity? Without thinking, as the girl walked past him, he stuck out his index finger and poked her in the belly. I suppose you could say she was also spontaneous because when he poked her, she expelled an undesirable amount of loud, noisy gas. She was mortified! She ran away in horror!--totally humiliated as the table of college boys roared with laughter. Howls and howls of rip-roaring laughter.

The Moral of the Story

What are the odds of ever getting a date with that beauty? Slim to none, and Slim has left town!

I want you to buy fencing, yes. But!! I don’t want you to be hilarious or spontaneous. There’s no need for that. Terry has been helping Louis Page’s customers buy fencing for a long time--24 years come September! And she can be your best friend in helping you choose the right product. She’s also a whiz at locating those odd, hard-to-find sizes.

Call Terry at 978-486-3116 (Tap to Call) or check out our website: LouisPage.com.

And the next time you want to get a date, don’t act like a hilarious, spontaneous college guy named Rick; take your time and treat her like a lady. She’ll appreciate your manners.

All my best,

Debbie Page
