Yesterday, I had one of those heartwarming moments that just makes you smile from ear to ear, and it all started with my little black poodle, Phoebe. She’s two years old, weighs a solid 18.5 pounds, and has been on quite the adventure lately—training to visit nursing homes. To help her get comfortable around lots of people, I’ve been taking her into places like the grocery store and the hardware store. New Hampshire allows dogs in retail stores, and Phoebe has been a star!

At the grocery store yesterday, a bunch of people stopped to pet her. What really caught my attention was how much joy she brought to them. Phoebe, who used to be wild and crazy, just calmly soaked it all in, wagging her little tail. It was clear she was enjoying it just as much as they were.

It made me think: if I lived in town and had her in a fenced yard, I bet there’d be a line of people down the street waiting to pet and hug her!

Bampy Turned Everything Up a Notch or Two

Yesterday, as I played with my grandchildren, we immersed ourselves in one of their fantastic imaginary worlds. Daddy was building a holder for the round bales of hay, and the kids turned it into a house complete with a slide and garage. It was pure joy.

The Magic of Bampy

Then something magical happened—Bampy, their grandfather, came outside and joined the fun. That’s when everything came alive! The game became so much more animated, filled with laughter, excitement, and joy. We started a game of Frisbee, then Duck, Duck, Goose, and the chase began. There were loud squeals of delight, some bruises, and hurt feelings, but Bampy kept the game going. There was something about having him, a man, involved in the play that made everything more dynamic, more exciting, and just so much more fun.

It made me reflect on the vital roles men play in our society. Whether as fathers, grandfathers, mentors, or leaders, men provide strength, guidance, and protection in ways that enrich and support the people around them. They contribute a sense of adventure, structure, and dependability that shapes families, businesses, and communities alike. Their involvement is crucial—not just in the big moments, but also in the small ones, where they can make the ordinary extraordinary.

Yesterday, I took a moment to step outside and breathe in the crisp autumn air. As I approached the bridge over the river, I heard the sounds of giggles and joy from a young couple, lost in each other’s company. It reminded me that, even with the chaos of the world, life continues to offer moments of truth, goodness, and beauty.

But it’s impossible not to think of the devastation left behind by Hurricane Helene in the South. Families have been displaced, loved ones lost, and communities are facing a long road to recovery. Despite the destruction, we’re seeing incredible acts of kindness and resilience. Organizations like Samaritan’s Purse are on the ground, providing much-needed goods and services, and Elon Musk’s Starlink is helping to restore vital internet connections to the area.

In times like these, I’m reminded of J.R.R. Tolkien’s powerful words:

"The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater."

Even amidst hardship, love and beauty continue to shine through.

80 Chicken Feet and Nine Hours of Work

I was originally going to use "From Farm to Table: A Fencing Story and Fresh Perspectives" for the title, but I thought "80 Chicken Feet..." was more fun. You be the judge.

A Firsthand Farm Experience

This past weekend, I had a front-row seat to a process most people in the USA never get to witness—Daniel and Rachel slaughtered their 40 chickens, and I was on babysitting duty for the little ones. It was an exciting experience watching the entire cycle unfold.

Daniel captured the chickens, brought them to the slaughtering station, and then used an electric plucker to remove the feathers—a far cry from the laborious method my mother once described from her farm days.

Once Rachel took over the gutting and cutting, everything was neatly separated—the feet in one bowl, the liver, heart, and gizzard in another, and the chickens in a holding tank of cold water. When the final process of vacuum-sealing was done, their freezer was filled with six months' worth of super nutritious, healthy chickens. Rachel uses the chicken feet when making broth, as they add a tremendous amount of nutritional value.
