Dreamin' and scheming

Lions are majestic, they are the King of the jungle, they are regal, and they are magnificent. Duncan loved lions, and if you were to visit me, you would find numerous lions throughout the house: bronze, brass, resin, wood, and I’m not sure what other materials have been used to create them.

Sometimes, I play hide-and-seek with the children, hiding the lions in various places. We call our lions Aslan after Chronicles of Narnia. When Duncan and I met, he began bringing me to the New Hampshire lake house, and he would take the backroads through Allenstown, NH. A life-size cement lion stands in the front yard of an old farmhouse. It is the most marvelous cast lion I have seen. Standing high on its three-foot-high pedestal, it looks over the road and valley.

We longed to have that lion in our yard. Duncan said he would fly the flags of Scotland and the USA alongside it, and we knew exactly where we would put it. Duncan guessed the lion would weigh over a thousand pounds! We would laugh and dream and scheme how we could have that lion. Would the owners sell it? We never stopped to ask, but we did think about pulling up in the middle of the night and hauling the lion off. Of course, we would never do that, but it was a fun thing to think about, sort of Jason Statham style.

I recently learned about a Nebraskan sculptor, Fred Hoppe. He brings figures to life, including a magnificent lion now living in New Hampshire! And I saw it today. Check out his work. I’ve seen his female eagle, moose, horse, and others. They are so life-like it takes your breath away.

I love how creative people are. We all have the innate ability to create, though some take their talents to higher levels.

Think about your property. Dream and scheme to turn it into paradise. Perhaps complete with a bronze statue, a fence, and, of course, a fire pit!

Though Fred Hoppe has only cast one full-size lion to date, he still has the mold and could make more! I don’t think it’s currently in my budget, but I’m dreamin’ ‘n’ schemin’. Where there is a will, there is a way.

“Might could”

As you probably remember, I’m Southern, having grown up in South Carolina and then spending 24 years in Atlanta, Georgia. I am proud of my Southern heritage. However, even after living in New England for over 25 years, I still have some of my Southernese as part of my language. I don’t realize it until someone points it out.

I was on the phone with a friend today and I used the phrase, “might could.” Lisa started laughing and told me she recognized my Southern upbringing. I don’t think I’ve ever thought about that phrase, though I am sure I use it often enough. Yep, we all used that phrase in my family and among my friends.

I also was reminded today of the song Roy Rogers sang, “Don’t Fence Me In.” He’s singing about the West, another unique region of the USA with their own phrases and way of life.

It’s fun to think about these various parts of our beautiful country and the special ways of their people. Growing up I absolutely adored all the Westerns, from Bonanza to Rawhide, so many wonderful shows and movies. In my mind there were always fences for their horses, but when those cowboys rode out in the West they wanted freedom from fences!

We need fences in our civilized world. We have animals, crops, orchards, and people to protect. And fences fill that job.

But I didn't know . . .

I arrived at the farm on Sunday before the family got home from swimming. I had the little black puppy affectionately known as Phoebe Louise with me. I decided to take her on a walk along the cow pen.

The mama cow stared long and hard at Phoebe and then returned to munching the grass. The baby must have been sleeping as I didn’t see her. We walked around and several times came pretty close to Hyacinth, the mama. But she didn’t take any interest in the little poodle.

When Daniel and the family arrived home, Daniel was concerned about the dog being in the cow’s view. He explained that cows have been known to charge dogs and coyotes! But I didn’t know! Thank goodness that didn’t happen. I can only imagine what the scene would have looked like!

Even though they are fenced in, the fence is electric and would collapse if an 800-lb. animal charged!

These cows haven’t been around dogs. Really? Dogs belong on a farm! Phoebe minded her manners, but domesticated cows are still unpredictable.

I prefer permanent fencing, especially for large animals. There are great options for wire mesh for fields and farms. Check them out.

In the meantime, I will try taking Phoebe over again, but this time, it will be when Daniel is home. I no longer can use the excuse, “But I didn’t know.”

Cicadas. This year, two broods emerged at the same time. I arrived in Wheaton, Illinois for a three-day conference, and was greeted by the incredible cacophony of these insects. The sound was as loud as a jet engine. I'm told they can get up to 100 decibels.

The campus at Wheaton College, as well as the town of Wheaton, are lovely. I arose early each morning and walked to town for a superb Americano. The walk into town wound through the city park that had once been the property of John Quincy Adams, fourth cousin of the former president. The four paths led to the central fountain. Lilacs and pink peonies were in full bloom. As beautiful as some of the French gardens I'd been missing. No playgrounds! But baby bunnies played amongst the grass and flowers.

Cicadas on the tree trunks. Cicadas on the sidewalks. It was definitely the best of times with the Spring blooms and the worst of times with the cicadas on the ground. But! The symphony of the cicadas was delightful.

I'm afraid I have no fence solutions for cicadas! But hop on over to Louis Page and find a fence to keep the bunnies out.
