The Eagle and Child

The Eagle and Child

If you are familiar with the Inklings, you recognize the title. Writing in Oxford, England, in the 1930s, 40s, and beyond, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and other authors met regularly to discuss literature and the books they were working on. Lewis is known for the Chronicles of Narnia, and Tolkien for The Lord of the Rings. They met at a pub in St. Giles called the Eagle and Child, which they nicknamed the “Bird and Baby.”

A Spectacular Sighting

What made me think of that? My view of the lake is spectacular, and this week, I have seen the mature Bald eagle with the classic white head and the juvenile eagle with brown heads and mottled bodies and wings. A note of trivia: the juvenile eagle has a wider wingspan than the mature eagle due to its longer feathers. Both creatures are magnificent. And I witnessed both of them several times this week.

Here’s the treat of the week. Yesterday, while I was on the screen porch, the juvenile eagle—the “child”—flew towards me, turned around, skimmed the lake's surface, turned around again, and landed on the roof of the boathouse. Perched at my eye level, he sat there looking at me. Spectacular! Probably “a once-in-a-lifetime” event! What an absolute joy to witness.

Fencing for Protection

It’s lovely that so many of God’s creatures can roam or fly wherever they choose. But humans must protect our property, gardens, crops, orchards, etc., from other creatures. Though they might be beautiful, we don’t want them in certain places.
