🍯 Sleeping in a Room of Honey: The Magic of Slovenian Bee Houses & the Right Fencing

There’s something magical happening just down the road from me. My neighbor Suzanne has created a slice of Slovenia right here in New England—a traditional Slovenian bee house. And trust me, it’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

Unlike the typical American beekeeping setup, where you’ll see individual boxes dotting a field, Slovenian hives are built into a structure—imagine a cozy house, but for bees and their keepers! Inside, alongside the humming hives, Suzanne has installed bunk beds dressed with bright, cheerful Slovenian textiles.

When Suzanne’s brother gave us a tour, the first thing that hit me was the smell. Honey—thick, amber, almost tangible in the air. The kind of scent that makes you want to lean in, breathe deep, and maybe never leave. I’ll admit it—I was ready to move in!

Protection Comes in Many Forms

Of course, humans aren’t the only ones attracted to that sweet smell. That’s why Suzanne has an electric fence surrounding her bee house—black bears can smell honey from a mile away.

It got me thinking about how protection comes in many forms. Whether it’s an electric fence for bears, welded wire mesh for livestock, or plastic netting for gardens, every agricultural venture needs the right barrier for the job.

P.S. Curious about Slovenian beekeeping? Let me know, and I’ll share some photos of Suzanne’s setup next time. Between the painted hive fronts and those cozy bunk beds, it’s like nothing you’ve seen in American beekeeping!
