Vinyl Coated Hardware Cloth - small opening, galvanized after weld (GAW) wire mesh covered with a thick coating of black vinyl. There are two specifications available: 19 gauge - 1/2" x 1/2" mesh and 23 gauge - 1/4" x 1/4" mesh. The thick, flexible UV inhibited PVC coating is tightly bonded to the underlying wire. Black color blends with the background, becoming virtually invisible. This tough durable finish stands up to rough treatment and can be used in any situation where a long lasting small mesh is needed. Vinyl coated hardware cloth has the following features:
- black coating is unobtrusive - it blends with the background
- ideal for use in wet areas - underwater or underground applications
- thick, tough, black PVC coating over galvanized after weld (GAW) wire mesh
- double protection from rust and corrosion - outlasts galvanized hardware cloth
- excellent underground gopher barrier
- easy to see through window glass or screen protection
- prevents small rodents from gnawing the bark off young trees
- makes an effective, unobtrusive barrier to prevent small nuisance animals from entering an area around or in the home
- use as an apron attached to a fence or as a buried ground wire to keep animals from digging under a fence

Keystone Steel and Wire, makers of high quality Red Brand wire products, produces two types of galvanized woven wire mesh for horse fencing:
Keepsafe Diamond Mesh - heavy duty 12-1/2 gauge double strand horizontal wires woven with 14 gauge wires in a 2"x4" diamond mesh pattern; 50" and 58" x 165' rolls.
2"x4" Mesh Non-Climb - 10 gauge top and bottom wires, 12-1/2 gauge "filler" wires woven into 2" x 4" mesh; 36", 48", 60" and 72" x 100' rolls.
You can trust these products to safely contain your horses. Both of these fences share the following characteristics:
- fence meshes have spring and flexibility
- long lifetime, requiring little maintenance
- strong and safe woven mesh construction
- no sharp projecting wires to scratch animals or people
- openings in fence are too small to entangle legs or hooves
- easier to install on uneven ground than rigid welded meshes
- available with Class 1 or Class 3 (extra heavy) galvanized finish

Each year, thousands of drownings and near-drowning events occur in the U.S. - swimming pool tragedies that are preventable. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has studied this problem extensively. Their conclusion about the best way to reduce and hopefully eliminate these incidents:
Pool owners must install and maintain effective barriers to prevent young children from entering the pool area.
Swimming pool barriers, defined in the BOCA national building code requirements for both in ground and above ground pools, should be/have:
-
-
- at least 48" high
- free of foot holds
- self-closing gates
- free of hand holds
- self-latching gates
- made with small openings:
- horizontal - no wider than 1-3/4"
- vertical - no higher than 4"
- locking devices on all gates
- less than 4" clearance from ground to bottom of barrier
It is
very important to check your local codes before installing any swimming pool barrier, whether solid, with horizontal and vertical members, or made using welded or woven wire mesh fence. Local codes may vary.
For further information, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has a 32 page brochure available as a PDF: Guidelines for Entrapment Hazards: Making Pools and Spas Safer.
